Student Opportunities

Student Engineers

The job description of an IAC-SFSU student engineer is as follows:

  • Research energy systems
  • Communicate with clients, utilities and vendors
  • Analyze utility rates
  • Conduct energy and waste assessments at small- to medium-scale industrial facilities with teams of faculty and other student engineers
  • Conduct energy analyses  from onsite measurements and analyze potential energy efficiency measures
  • Write professional-grade engineering reports, detailing assessment findings and recommendations for energy efficiency and waste reduction
  • Project coordination
  • Work 150 to 200 hours during the semester and at least half time during summer (this includes a full-day assessment on about two Thursdays per month)


Undergraduate Students:

  • Junior or low senior class standing
  • Majoring in mechanical or electrical engineering

Graduate Students:

  • First year status
  • Enrolled in the M.S. of engineering program with a concentration in energy systems or embedded electrical and computer systems


The IAC-SFSU administrator’s activities are as follows:

  • Handles audit inquiries
  • Schedules audit appointments
  • Obtains client documentation for engineer evaluation
  • Travel arrangements
  • Marketing to potential clients
  • Marketing materials and correspondence
  • Conducts research via manufacturer database
  • Quarterly reports
  • Expense reports
  • Ordering supplies
  • Department events
  • Special projects as needed


Undergraduate Students:

  • Junior or senior class standing
  • Majoring in business, marketing, or liberal arts
  • Professional writing and advanced spreadsheet skills a must

Graduate Students:

  • First year status
  • Enrolled in the M.S. College of Business program
